One pioneering group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is applying emotion AI to improve mental health and overall quality of life. Recently the Affective Computing Research Group at the MIT Media Lab published a new study that provides empirical evidence that empathetic artificial intelligence (AI) machine learning can counterbalance the adverse effects of anger on human creative problem solving. The MIT study involved over a thousand participants to play a word guessing game, Wordle, to see how anger and empathy impacts performance. Those assigned to the anger elicitation condition performed poorly compared to the control group. The research shows that an empathic AI agent can reduce the negative impact of anger on creative problem solving.

Socially assistive robots (SARS) are a class of robotic systems specifically designed to help vulnerable or older users to complete everyday activities. In addition to increasing their independence, these robots could stimulate users mentally and offer basic emotional support. To support users most effectively, however, these robots should be able to engage in meaningful social interactions, identifying the emotions of users and responding appropriately to them. This could ultimately increase the users' trust in the robots, while also promoting their emotional wellbeing. Researchers at University of Denver, DreamFace Technologies, and University of Colorado have recently carried out a small pilot study aimed at exploring how the perceptions of older adults using socially assistive robots change depending on whether these robots have an artificial emotional intelligence or not.

Can artificial intelligence (AI) have emotional intelligence? Research published in the International Journal of Engineering Systems Modelling and Simulation, plots the roadmap. With the advent of 5G communication technology and its integration with AI, we are looking at the dawn of a new era in which people, machines, objects, and devices are connected like never before. This smart era will be characterized by smart facilities and services such as self-driving cars, smart UAVs, and intelligent healthcare. This will be the aftermath of a technological revolution. But the flip side of such technological revolution is that AI itself can be used to attack or threaten the security of 5G-enabled systems which, in turn, can greatly compromise their reliability. It is, therefore, imperative to investigate such potential security threats and explore countermeasures before a smart world is realized.

A smartphone that can warn you not to send a text while you're upset? Early in my career--back in the stone age before computers and smartphones--I worked in environments where memos were a primary means of communication. Sure, my colleagues and I could talk face-to-face, but the culture of the time was to memorialize much of our interaction in writing. Believe it or not, there were some advantages in what now seems such an archaic practice. Unlike texts and emails--where one tap of the "send" button can fill you with instant regret--the old-fashioned memo provided a cushion of safety, a chance to reconsider.

I'm told I should prepare for the day an artificial intelligence takes my job. This will leave me either destitute and rootless or overwhelmed by a plenitude of time and existential terror, depending on whom you ask. It's apparently time to consider what kind of work only humans can do, and frantically reorient ourselves toward those roles -- lest we be left standing helplessly, as if at the end of some game of robot musical chairs. What is artificial emotional intelligence? When computers can read emotions by analyzing data, including facial expressions, gestures, tone of voice, force of keystrokes, and more to determine a person's emotional state and then react to it, we call this artificial emotional intelligence.

Until recently, technology was somewhat limited in terms of its ability to sense and adapt to human emotions and reactions. Our apps, devices and advanced AI systems have lots of cognitive intelligence, but no emotional intelligence. As such, transactions between humans and machines are relatively superficial and often ineffective. But over the last few years, Affectiva created never-before-seen technology: software that identifies complex human emotional and cognitive states, by analyzing people's faces and voices. Essentially, we infused AI with EI (emotional intelligence)--allowing for much more productive, persuasive interactions between tech and humans. This was a brand-new category that hadn't yet been defined in AI. We coined it "artificial emotional intelligence," or "Emotion AI." As a result, our challenge was to introduce the tech and establish a major footprint for it--as well as our brand--in the AI industry.
